Children’s art competition winner presents Jubilee book to HM the Queen

Her Majesty the Queen was presented with a Book of Commemorative Messages in celebration of the Diamond Jubilee by Jessica Hartley from Stamford.
Jessica was one of over 800 local children aged from four to eleven who entered the art competition, hosted by the Stamford Committee on behalf of The Children’s Society.

The Book is the culmination of this competition where the children submitted pictures on the theme of ‘Being British’ – what made them proud of the nation. Their subject matter was wide ranging, from the invading Vikings who prompted the inauguration of the monarchy, to fish and chips, the rain, Jessie J and the Beatles.

An exhibition of the children’s works was mounted over the Jubilee weekend and seventy of these pictures were printed in the Commemorative Book along with over 500 messages of congratulations, written by the people of Stamford.

Jessica, aged seven, whose picture appeared on the front cover, said: “It was amazing to meet the Queen and to be able to present her with the book. I am very happy that my picture is on the front cover. I will definitely remember this day for the rest of my life.”

The Stamford Committee is a long-standing supporter of The Children’s Society and was thrilled to hold the competition in aid of the charity.

“We are delighted that Her Majesty visited Stamford for this special occasion. The book was our way of paying tribute to the Queen on her Diamond Jubilee. It was a dream come true for us and for Jessica to meet the Queen in person,” said Sam Roddan, who is a member of the Stamford Committee and came up with the idea of organising the competition and Book.

The Stamford Committee also held a ‘Being British’ Contemporary Gala Art Evening, in aid of The Children’s Society’s work helping vulnerable children and young people across England.
