It was a particular pleasure to see six pictures sell so well in the November Lincoln Fine Art auction.
Trevor Grimshaw is one among a group loosely defined in Peter Davies’ 1989 book A Northern School: Lancashire Artists of the Twentieth Century.

I came to this group of artists some 10 years later while working in Manchester and more especially Grimshaw’s work after viewing a retrospective exhibition held at Stockport Art Gallery in 2004.

His work in pencil and charcoal depicts a northern landscape with smoking chimneys, railways and steam engines. A style of work that is unique, but with a naive simplicity associated with other Northern School artists.

Grimshaw auction buyers are both enthusiastic and loyal and have seen the value of his work at auction move from £10s in the early 2000s to £1,000s.

The six pictures on offer at the Lincoln auction did not disappoint.

Pre-auction interest was high with numerous condition reports being requested.

On the day of the sale, a combination of online and telephone bids saw prices range from £700 to £1,500.
