CATHEDRAL TO HOST BYRD 400 FESTIVAL
As part of the Byrd 400 celebrations taking place this summer, visitors to Lincoln Cathedral will see and hear the St Teilo Organ, a new addition in St Hugh’s Choir.

The Byrd 400 Festival takes place at Lincoln Cathedral between 30th June and 4th July marking the 400th anniversary of the death of William Byrd, one of England’s most prolific and respected composers of the late Renaissance.

His influence on choral music is comparable to that of his contemporary Shakespeare’s influence on literature, and to this day Byrd’s sacred music is among that most commonly performed by parish and cathedral choirs.

The St Teilo Organ is a modern reproduction of a Tudor organ of the type that would have been familiar to William Byrd during his time as Master of the Choristers at Lincoln Cathedral. It is on display in the cathedral until September 2023.

The beautiful organ was built in 2001 by organ builders Goetze and Gwynn using traditional materials and techniques and is based on an original Tudor soundboard found at Wetheringsett in Suffolk in 1977.

The oak case is covered in stunning decoration, including murals depicting the Annunciation and Adoration of the Shepherds on the doors. The organ is entirely mechanical, with power provided by a set of manually operated bellows.

Hosting honour
The Revd Canon Nick Brown, Precentor at Lincoln Cathedral, said the organisation was honoured to be hosting the organ: “The stunning St Teilo organ looks very much at home in St Hugh’s choir, in the heart of Lincoln Cathedral. This style of organ would have been familiar to William Byrd during his time at Lincoln Cathedral, when he wrote much of his music, and so it seems apt to have it in residence while we celebrate his life and music.”

He added that the sound is somewhat different to what listeners are used to from the grand Father Willis organ in the Cathedral today.

“Not only is the St Teilo instrument much smaller, it is also tuned about a semi-tone higher than the Willis, so the overall effect will sound slightly unusual to our ears, but we very much hope that everyone will enjoy this opportunity to hear Byrd’s music performed in the most authentic way possible, in the space where he worked day-to-day and for which so much of his music was written.”

The festival will welcome world-renowned performers and academics to Lincoln, to celebrate the life and works of Byrd, and will include music in the liturgy, events and concerts and a lecture series.

The St Teilo organ was built as part of the Arts and Heritage Research Council/Economic and Social Research Council-funded “Experience of Worship” project (Bangor University, led by John Harper).

Lincoln Cathedral would like to thank Professor Harper for permitting the loan of the instrument, Prof.

Andrew Kirkman (University of Birmingham) for facilitating the loan, and Prof. Magnus Williamson for securing support from Newcastle University’s QR Policy Support Fund.

The St Teilo organ will be on display in the cathedral during normal opening hours and will also be used during services, concerts and lectures as part of the Byrd 400 Festival.

Now in its 138th year, The Lincolnshire Show will take place on Wednesday 21st and Thursday 22nd June 2023, with tickets now on sale.

This year’s event will see the addition of new zones and breath-taking entertainment in the Main Ring as well as a range of favourite exhibitors and spectacular live demonstrations.

Andrew Buckley, chairman at Lincolnshire Agricultural Society said: “We can’t wait to welcome visitors back to the Lincolnshire Show this year. We really want to encourage families, young people and individuals to come in and join in the fun. We offer an amazing array of exhibitors, live demonstrations and interactive displays that are loved by all.”

With excitement already mounting, this year also welcomes the new LAS president, HM Lord-Lieutenant, Toby Dennis.

Andrew continued: “A big welcome also to the new LAS president, HM Lord-Lieutenant, Toby Dennis. It’s great to have him on board for what is set to be another fantastic show. VINTAGE SPEED TRIALS WILL PAY FITTING TRIBUTE
Grimsthorpe Castle estate will once again be filled with the distinctive roar of pre-war motorbike and car engines as the event remembers the speed trials’ founder, Richard Powell, who passed away in 2022.

Save the date in your diary – Saturday 1st July – and be sure to book your tickets for what promises to be a memorable day.

Richard’s knowledge and enthusiasm for vintage and classic motor vehicles was infectious and organisers Mel Hart and Colin Faulkner remain devoted to upholding the spirit and authentic pre-war speed trialling atmosphere which makes the event so unique.

The Syston Park Speed Trials was first held in 2015 and relocated to Grimsthorpe in 2018. From the marshals in their brown duster coats to the vintage commentary caravan – and of course the more than 100 classic cars and motorbikes that will compete – the day honours the rich heritage of Grimsthorpe, which hosted the first time trials for the Lincolnshire Automobile Club in 1903. Grimsthorpe Castle is a magnificent backdrop for the event and its main approach, which will form the track for the day, is slightly elevated and offers an unrivalled view of the action. The castle is less than five miles from Bourne, a town with its own rich automobile history as the home of racing driver Raymond Mays and his Bourne based ERA and BRM companies.

“We are already fully subscribed with 60 cars and 40 motorcycles entered for the track trials. We also have a reserves list,” said Mel. “It is wonderful that we will be welcoming back so many familiar faces from previous years who relish the pre-war atmosphere of the day as much as we do. There is the opportunity, however, to register online to bring your vintage vehicle (pre-1939) to be statically displayed in the glorious Vanburgh Courtyard. You can also bring your classic vehicle on the day and secure a place in the Forward Car Parking for classic cars which always attracts many admirers and enthusiasts from amongst the spectators.”

Among the highlights of vehicles that will be running on the track this year will be the ERA owned by Roland Duce, a 1925 and a 1931 Bugatti as well as a 1936 Aston Martin. Six Edwardian cars will also compete including a 1922 Wolseley and a 1920 Ford Fontenelle.

Notable motorcycles include a 1936 Velocette, a 1909 Lincoln Elk, a 1928 Scott Flying Squirrel and a 1925 BSA.

“It was the vintage attention to detail which was so important to Richard,” Mel continued. “In his honour we will be presenting the Richard Powell Cup for the most authentic driver or rider of the day judged on appearance, so visitors and triallers are invited to join in the fun by coming along attired in their own period dress.”

Sebastian Miller and the Grimsthorpe Estate give their support to the event which reflects the castle’s history as host to Lincolnshire Automobile Club, when in 1903 Sir Hickman Bacon, the founder of the club, and his fellow pioneering Edwardian car and motorbike enthusiasts met for the first time to test their vehicles. These ‘Reliability Trials’ continued until 1911 and gave owners the chance to compete against the clock as well as fellow club members.

The Capability Brown designed parkland offers plenty of space for visitors to enjoy picnics but there will also be locally based food companies offering Lincolnshire produce of their own. The Red Lion at Caythorpe is running a BBQ, Tikka Tonic will be offering some amazing street food, sip a freshly brewed tea or coffee from Boxed Drinks, while Mac & Cheese will be the speciality from FoodBox. For dessert, cool off with treats from Lulabelles Ice Creams, a business set up with encouragement from Richard.

Browse books and posters, vintage automobilia or simply indulge in some tea and cake – or enjoy a pint from the bar.

The organisers are very appreciative of the support they receive from Lincoln based wealth management advisors Brewin Dolphin and classic vehicle auctioneers H&H Classics, who are the main sponsors for 2023. If you would like to be involved, Mel and Colin would welcome volunteers who could help with marshalling on track or giving assistance setting up or in the car parks. Just get in contact via the website to see how you could be involved with this very special event.

As well as all the attractions, there will be a raffle in aid of Cancer Research organised by Richard’s daughter Helena and her friend Beth Farr. There are some exceptional prizes to be won including tickets to the Goodwood Revival and wine tasting at Waddesdon Manor.

Helena and Beth are also in training for a cross-Channel swim in August, retracing Richard’s own solo channel swim in his youth. The girls are hoping to raise £12,000 on their Just Giving page for the charity which you can find under: Beth and Helena Swim the Channel, if you wish to make a donation.

As well as the spectacle of these magnificent racing machines against the backdrop of one of the county’s finest stately homes, there is also the opportunity to look around Grimsthorpe Castle and its beautiful gardens and parkland. This year’s Grimsthorpe Speed Trials promises to be a fitting tribute to Richard Powell and his love of classic British Motoring.
