Description
Welcome to our midsummer issue, which in spite of our recent weather (seemingly unable to make up its mind what season it is) highlights the enjoyment of days spent pottering in the garden or enjoying the Best of Lincolnshire, as highlighted across our pages this month.
In anticipation of a heatwave, Steffie Shields offers some welcome advice on helping plants thrive, as well as identifying colourful varieties to brighten up your borders and pots (page 26). This month is also a favourite time to visit an open garden – check out Steffie’s suggestions of glorious charity gardens in Louth, Boston and Horncastle.
Caroline Bingham was recently treated to an exclusive tour of Lincoln’s Cathedral’s Chapter House – which has been undergoing renovation works since 2021 – in the company of volunteer Stuart Welch, head of the Cathedral guides (p.74).
This magnificent medieval building has a long and fascinating history and was the venue for one of the earliest meetings of Parliament called by Edward I in January 1301. Check out the new programme of Cathedral Tours, which includes guided access to the roof – it’s an unforgettable experience.
Talking of memorable moments, Kate Chapman chatted to inspirational athlete David Argyle, who has been selected to represent Team UK at this year’s Invictus Games in September (p.32). David, who served with the RAF in the second Gulf War, will compete in wheelchair rugby and wheelchair basketball as part of the 59-strong UK contingent of armed forces veterans and serving personnel.
He says: “Going to the Games is a once in a lifetime opportunity – I can’t wait to embrace everything about it and take it all in for the experience.”
Along with his family and many supporters, we wish David and the rest of the team our very best wishes for a successful Games.
Finally, don’t miss your chance to support your favourite food, drink and hospitality heroes in our prestigious Taste of Excellence Awards. Nominations can be made by post or email using our form, or online via the Lincolnshire Life website – entries close on 31st August.
See you next month!
