The Lincoln Fine Art sale held at Golding Young & Mawer consisted of over 500 lots. One of the largest art sales to be held at the Lincoln auction rooms, it required extra hanging space. The sale got off to a brisk start, with all of the initial lots selling quickly. Lot 8 topped the section selling for £2,700, and Lot 23, a horse painting by Frances Mabel Hollams again finding the four figure bid at £1,600.

Lincoln artist Peter Brannan (1926-1994), past president of the Lincolnshire Artists’ Society, was represented in the auction with a typical seaside scene in oil, titled Behind the Sea Wall, signed and dated 1977. The picture had excellent provenance, having been exhibited at the Usher Gallery’s One Man Show in 1978. The picture went on to nearly double its pre-sale estimate when the hammer fell at £380.

The work of another local artist, Andrzej Kuhn (1929-2014) appeared later in the auction. Born in Poland, his family escaped at the end of the Second World War to the UK, and later in the 1960s Andrzej married and settled in South Lincolnshire.

The oil on canvas scene of a ship, sailor and moon sold above top estimate for £650.

A traditional C18th oil on canvas of woodcocks at the water’s edge by the artist Stephen Elmer (1717-1796) continued the good performance of all sections of the art market, selling for £2,200.
