Artist Sally Mitchell is organising an online auction to help raise much-needed funds.
At the end of the 19th century there was an auction held in Tuxford every Saturday and now creator and curator of Tuxford’s Museum of the Horse, Sally Mitchell, has taken this tradition one step further by organising an online auction on Sunday 9th March from 5pm in aid of the museum.
“I felt that it would be fun to revive the tradition of a Tuxford auction, if with only the occasional sale.
Having been a buyer in these rooms for many years, beginning when an auction room made its money from a 10% selling fee, I have watched the system of buyer’s fees grow to such a ridiculous amount today, that some rooms take as much as 45% of the price of each item they sell!
“With this auction, I have therefore decided to keep the fees as low as possible. There is an expense of using the auction site which does add to our cost, but I am going to keep the fees to an entry fee of just £1 an item and a selling fee of just 8%. We are inviting people to give us a chance and send items for us to sell. Let’s see if we can make a reasonably priced auction room work!”
Worldwide buyers
The auction will be listed online at the-saleroom.com so items will be available to view worldwide. These sites allow buyers worldwide to see anything they have searches registered for, which means anyone searching for these items will automatically be shown them. Interested bidders will also be able to bid for them online from the comfort of their own home.
All fees earned will go to the fund to help preserve the Museum of the Horse for the future. Sally will be 80 at the end of this year so is looking to the future when she is no longer able to run the Museum, which celebrated its 10th birthday last year.
The timed online auction will have sections for Antiques, Collector’s Items, Household and Rural Items. Anyone who decides to sell or buy items will be helping to preserve the Museum and The Newcastle Arms in the old centre of Tuxford.
Viewing of the auction lots will take place on Friday 7th March 10am-4pm and Saturday 8th March 10am-2pm in the new Conference Room behind the Museum of the Horse and Sally Mitchell’s Gallery, 1 Market Place, Tuxford, Notts NG22 0LA and from 1st March online on the-saleroom.com
