GRESHAM’S WELCOMES RUGBY LEGEND TO TEACHING TEAM
International rugby icon and former Gresham’s pupil, Ben Youngs, is returning to the school as head of performance sport.
Tell us about your new role at Gresham’s School?
“I’m excited to be returning to Gresham’s, where I was once a pupil, to take on the role of head of performance sport. I’ll be working across a range of sports – including hockey, netball, cricket and rugby – mentoring and developing pupils to reach their full potential.”
How did your time at Gresham’s influence your development?
“It was a huge influence, both on and off the pitch. On the sports field, I had two brilliant coaches who encouraged me to aim high and chase my dreams – there were no limits with them. Beyond sport, I developed in the classroom as well – learning essential skills like decision making, presenting, and listening to others.”
What do you hope to achieve in mentoring the pupils?
“I’ve spent a long time in high-performance environments and experienced highs and lows along the way.
I want to share those experiences with the pupils, help them unlock their potential, and build their confidence so they can be the best version of themselves.”
How can your experience of playing for England and the Lions be applied in your new role?
“I tackled playing for England and the Lions with huge enthusiasm, and that’s exactly what I want to bring to this role. I want to challenge pupils and help them commit fully to what they’re doing, whether it’s on the pitch or in other areas of life. The skills they develop – like dedication and resilience – can be carried with them into whatever path they choose.”
What are you hoping you can instil in pupils?
“First and foremost, I want to teach humility – it’s such an important quality and something I’ve always valued. I also want pupils to be competitive in a way that focuses on challenging themselves rather than others.”

PARENT POWER SURVEY PUTS QEHS ON THE MAP
Queen Elizabeth’s High School, a co-educational grammar school in Gainsborough, has been identified by The Sunday Times in its 2025 Parent Power Survey as being the 9th best (and 3rd best co-educational) school in the East Midlands and 6th best in Lincolnshire. A national ranking of 275th out of over 4,000 places QEHS in the top 7% of schools across the country!
This survey rightly acknowledges schools where students have excelled in terms of both outright attainment and overall academic progress. Such outcomes bear testament to the hard work, commitment and dedication that students and staff characteristically demonstrate, not only when preparing for public examinations but throughout their learning journey at QEHS.
This positive culture around the dynamic learning and the enrichment of life skills that students experience is also reflected in the school’s excellent attendance figures, rising annually over the past three years: 95%, 96%, 97%.
These percentages notably top both local and national school attendance figures. The calm, orderly, safe and supportive learning environment that students enjoy is clearly central to facilitating and in turn promoting such excellent attendance.
The impressive credentials of QEHS are similarly recognised by Ofsted who have graded the school as solidly “Good” in all areas.
The inspection team noted that QEHS is a school where expectations around what students can achieve are high, that students thrive on this challenge and are successful in their academic studies.
Just as importantly, it is noted that students get on well together and interactions with their teachers are similarly positive and productive.
Above all, students are seen to benefit from an ambitious curriculum and a rich educational experience that serves to develop their confidence, character and to broaden horizons.

A CHOICE OF TWO AWARD-WINNING SCHOOLS AT QUEEN ETHELBURGA’S COLLEGIATE
Located in 220 acres of picturesque countryside between Harrogate and York, Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate (QE) is an award-winning day and boarding school catering to students aged 3 months to 19 years.
Many students begin their QE journey at Chapter House Prep or King’s Magna Middle School before transitioning to one of two senior schools: QE College or The Faculty of Queen Ethelburga’s.
The Faculty of Queen Ethelburga’s, for students in Years 10-13, was recently named Independent Schools Association’s Senior School of the Year 2024. This award highlights the school’s commitment to academic excellence, creative opportunities, and future preparation. The school offers a diverse and flexible curriculum, with timetables tailored to students’ passions, and over 150 extracurricular activities, including Esports and Motorsports. Students in the arts benefit from the Gold Artsmark accredited creative arts department and the Queen’s Academy of Creative Arts program, which provides additional studio time and opportunities for regional and national awards.
For aspiring athletes, QE Faculty offers the Performance Sport Pathway (PSP), which includes five extra hours of weekly sports development for Year 12 students. This pathway, available from Year 7, provides coaching from former professionals, access to top facilities, and personalised plans for skill development, strength, and conditioning.
In the performing arts, students have the opportunity to enhance their acting, musical theatre, dance, and stage combat skills through the ADA option. With audition support and extra rehearsal time, students participate in school productions held in the 312-seat professional theatre.
QE College, another senior school, focuses on academic excellence and enrichment. It was recently named the Sunday Times Top School in the North for Academic Performance for the fourth consecutive year. The school offers an Academic Pathway for students aiming for top universities, with specialised programs like the Medics Programme, which supports students in securing competitive university courses.
The ethos of Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate is to develop resilient, compassionate, and confident adults, with students encouraged to “be the best that they can with the gifts that they have.”
