Exploring Bourne

Quintessential market town Bourne has hidden depths and you risk missing some real gems unless you park up and take a walk around, as Glynis Fox discovers.

A wonderful mix of traditional charm, cultural heritage and modern industry, the town is surrounded by pretty countryside, but also conveniently close to other centres, such as Stamford, the Deepings villages and, a little further afield, the city of Peterborough.

Whilst Bourne’s roots can be traced back to Roman times, its growth and fortunes are heavily influenced by the agriculture, manufacturing and retail industries. Together, they also support a wealth of local jobs.

Whether you love shopping, looking at historic buildings, are searching for work, or specific services provided by the town’s diverse mix of companies and small businesses, there is plenty of interest in this destination.

On the retail front, in common with so many other market towns (and cities), Bourne residents and businesses have not escaped the lingering effects of Covid and the cost-of-living crisis.

That said, the good news is that many have bounced back thanks to taking a creative approach to diversifying their goods and services or switching to more cost-effective premises.

North Street, which runs through the centre of Bourne and leads on to South Street – en route to Peterborough – is the place to find many shops and eateries.

The mix includes Bourne Book Shop, ladies and giftware outlet Dani’s and family-run North Shoes – whose large store is bursting with styles to suit every member of the family.

Another well-known and long-standing North Street retailer is the hardware store Harrison & Dunn, which celebrated 90 years of trading in 2020.

This business offers the public and trade customers good old-fashioned traditional service, selling all manner of hardware, fixings, items for the home and garden and essential plumbing and electrical goods.

The town’s variety of coffee shops includes a branch of Costa – which is obviously popular. Some months ago, it moved from its original premises in North Street to a much larger unit along this street, where it sits near the entrance of The Burghley Centre.

SHOPS AND MORE
Bourne’s little alleys and lanes help to make the town much more interesting and, in today’s changing retail climate, you can never be sure what you will find. The Burghley Centre provides a useful link from a large car park through to North Street.

The Centre is always worth a look because it is home to a changing variety of retailers – look out health foods, toys and charity shops and more.

On the opposite side of North Street you will find Angel Precinct, which is fronted by the Angel Hotel, so why not book in for an overnight stay, or pop in for lunch or a coffee break?

At the entrance to the Precinct you will find Buckles & Bows, a colourful boutique which is stocked with a variety of ladies’ clothing, smart branded shoes and trainers, bags and accessories. It’s a great place to treat yourself or pick up a scarf or jewellery for a friend.

Deeper in the Precinct other retailers include Unique & Chic, which will attract the ‘magpies’ searching for a special gift or something to add to their favourite collection.

Nearby, The Sweet Stop, with its eye-catching window displays offers plenty of temptation for those with a sweet tooth. You are unlikely to resist popping in, especially if you happen to have children in tow!
This lovely area continues onto Crown Walk, where you will find Stephanies Flowers & Gifts, whose team have been supplying flowers for every occasion since 1997.

The Walk, which leads into West Street, is also the place to find Gather ‘N’ Sew. At the start of 2024, the owner changed direction, switching from a purely retail fabric and notions shop to a sewing workshops, social and events studio.

Glance through the windows when you are passing by and you could chance on a busy workshop in progress – if you love working with fabrics or making garments, you are likely to be tempted to book yourself a place!

BUSINESS LIFE
Bourne has a diverse range of companies providing an amazing variety of goods and services, including Lincolnshire Herbs, agricultural machinery distributor Opico Ltd, laundry specialist Johnsons, food industry company Bakkavor and Priory Marine (which repairs and services marine craft), to name just a few.

TOWN ATTRACTIONS

Bourne Abbey and Church of St Peter and St Paul
This historic abbey, dating back to the 12th century, is a remarkable example of medieval architecture. Not only is it a focal point for the community, it’s also a site of historical significance.

Bourne Woods
Managed by the Forestry Commission, Bourne Woods is a tranquil area offering walking trails, picnic spots, and opportunities for wildlife watching. It is a favourite of nature enthusiasts and families looking for a peaceful day out.

Bourne Heritage Centre
Located in Baldock’s Mill, this museum offers insights into the town’s history, from its Roman origins to its development through the centuries. Exhibits include artefacts, photographs and displays about notable local figures such as Raymond Mays, a pioneer in British motor racing.

Wellhead Park
A picturesque park featuring natural springs, landscaped gardens and play areas. It is an ideal spot for leisurely walks, family outings and community events.

The Red Hall
A stunning example of Elizabethan architecture, The Red Hall is now used for community events and private functions. Its beautiful gardens and historical ambience make it a must-visit.

HELP FOR JOBSEEKERS
The charity Toolbar is providing vital free support to local unemployed people who are looking to find a new job and in need of associated help in writing CVs, letters of application, getting retrained or looking for information about going self-employed or needing a hand in applying for Universal Credit.

People over the age of 18 who are currently out of work can access support from Toolbar volunteers, who have a range of skills and experience, at the Len Pick Suite, c/o Bourne Town Football Club in the town’s Abbey Road.

Spokesperson Roy McKinney said volunteers help everyone, from those in their late teens to people in their late fifties and beyond. They may have been referred by the Job Centre or other local support organisations, such as Don’t Lose Hope, previous clients or have seen adverts.

“Our key objective is to ensure that people end up with a meaningful CV, which will hopefully lead to job interviews. We also provide an up-to-date list of local job vacancies in Bourne and within 10 miles of the town and clients can also access the internet using our equipment,” said Roy.

“If someone needs training, we try to identify a relevant course or appropriate agency. People who are unemployed are usually given a range of basic training options by the Job Centre work coach.”

Toolbar also offers support to people who may be lacking in confidence – and no appointments are necessary.

“We have had several people come to us with either low confidence or mental health issues. The welcoming atmosphere at Toolbar appears to ease their tensions and they appear happy to take advantage of our support,” said Roy.

“The fact that we can occasionally help someone with a problem, health-wise or unemployment, makes doing what we do very satisfying. Just seeing a smile on the face of a client who, a few weeks earlier, struggled to walk through the door, is something special,” he added.

NEW OFFICE IN BOURNE AND A GROWING TEAM MARK HEGARTY’S 50TH YEAR
