Lincolnshire “You’ve Got Talent”
A host of unsigned bands and solo musicians from across Lincolnshire and Newark have become the new stars of Lincs FM recently.
The station’s launched its new Unplugged feature – handing over the airwaves to local bands, every Sunday afternoon, as part of Rob Hammond’s show.
The idea came about as a result of the station’s ‘You’ve Got Talent’ events, held previously to find acts to perform on the popular Lincs FM stage at the Lincolnshire Show.
Rob said: “We were seeing some fantastic acts appearing on the stage, and indeed some have featured at other Lincs FM events such as Christmas Light switch-ons and the like but we were chatting one day in the office and thought, wouldn’t they sound great on the radio itself?”
He has been inundated with local acts getting in touch since the Unplugged feature was launched over the summer and it has revealed a real variety of hidden talent right across the area.
Recent acts to feature have included alternative rock/pop band Mowbeck, from Grantham; the So and So’s from Cleethorpes; Sleaford band The Bliss – previously known as The Substitutes – and Coningsby singer-songwriter Alex Watts.
Rob said: “All we ask of any of the acts is that they’re unsigned, hence the Unplugged name. That doesn’t mean they can’t have released music, nor be a success in their own right.”
Indeed, many of the acts may well be known to some readers. The So and So’s for example released a new album last year, which they’d produced themselves and have been testing new songs on a recent tour around the UK.
Mowbeck have made a similar impact on the ‘unsigned’ music scene.
As well as hearing the music, Rob told Lincolnshire Life he also loves hearing the real passion of our local musicians and how hard they’ve worked at their craft. As Mowbeck vocalist Andy Thomas said: “Music has always been the biggest part of all of our lives and any good or bad memory in my life has always had music circling around it.”
Alex Watts is another example. Having started making his own music by playing in bands as a teen, he went on to gain a First Class degree in Creative Music Technology, before working in professional recording studios in London and performing at some of the country’s biggest and most iconic venues.
If you are in a band, or are a singer-songwriter, and have a song, available in either CD or MP3 quality, then drop Rob an email and it could be you featured on Lincs FM one Sunday in the next few weeks. You can find out more about Lincs FM Unplugged by visiting www.lincsfm.co.uk
