Combined family experience of more than 216 years in the world of finance and investment management is an impressive legacy which has fuelled Edward Strange’s ambition to see Brewin Dolphin Lincoln continue to flourish under his leadership.
Edward was invited to become head of office from January as his uncle, Peter Strange, stepped down from the role after 13 years to focus on client relationships and business development.

“It is a wonderful honour to have been given this opportunity,” said Edward, “and I want to build on this remarkable Strange family journey, continuing to look after our clients and their families with loyalty, compassion and sound advice.”

The Lincoln office of Brewin Dolphin, formerly Hill Osborne was headed by Edward’s grandfather, Ralph Strange in 1945 and then steered by his uncles David and Peter Strange. Edward’s father, John was a senior partner at Hill Osborne and has also been a huge influence, instilling the same values of trust and integrity which has seen the business looking after the wealth and financial interests of successive generations of families in Lincolnshire and beyond.

The last twelve months will certainly linger in everyone’s minds for the challenges presented by the pandemic and Brexit but Edward can also reflect on a landmark year personally. “Looking back, I certainly could not have known that all these events would culminate in 2020 but as well as completing my MBA, my wife, Susie and I celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary. There were milestone birthdays in our family (a daughter’s 21st and son’s 18th) and I marked my 20th anniversary of joining Brewin Dolphin.”

The two-year Exec MBA course which Edward undertook has given him the opportunity to re-boot his knowledge and skills acquired over 30 years in stockbroking and investment management. “I was given the opportunity to learn amongst and from the next generation. I loved the stimulus of the lectures and bringing this passion back to the team here.”

Colleagues at Brewin Dolphin Lincoln cover four decades of age groups, with energy and expertise at all levels. “Peter Strange leaves a powerful legacy of steering the business from being paper based to today’s electronic transactions and intelligence.

We have evolved from stockbroking to offering a complete port of call for financial planning and investment. What remains at the heart of our service are the strong relationships we build with our clients and their trust in our advice.”

Edward has a strong team of fellow directors and staff supporting him in his new role. His aim is to empower them even further to ensure that the interests of clients and the business continue to flourish. “My fellow directors, Peter Strange, James Scott, Andy Cave and David Spokes are all outstanding in their fields and our collaborative approach offers the broadest experience to manage intergenerational wealth and investment opportunities.”

Continuity in the leadership of the business has been a key factor for clients which is why as generations of families expand and members relocate, the core of clients are still located in Lincolnshire but others are across the East Midlands, the UK or around the world but all have links back to the county.

“We are a first port of call for wealth management, investment or financial planning whether that is in the form of trusts, charities, insurance or pensions. Having one business take a holistic approach to your future financial planning allows us to deliver a bespoke service for each client, tailored to their circumstance and ambitions.”

Clients appreciate the personal touches too, such as remembering birthdays and those family milestones which Edward and his own family have celebrated recently. “All of our team get to know clients on a personal level and I have made promises to many of mine that I will be there to hand the reins to their next generation. That trust and mutual loyalty is the foundation of Brewin Dolphin’s ethos.”

As the third generation of the Strange family steps into the head of office role, Edward feels privileged to have been offered the opportunity. “We have young, vibrant and hugely knowledgeable staff here at our Lincoln office and I am confident that both our clients and Brewin Dolphin Lincoln will continue to flourish.”
