Description
In this month’s issue we take a step back in time to the golden era of railway travel, as Mike Fowler provides an inside look at a unique exhibition. Rambles in Lincolnshire, currently on display at the Grimsby Fishing Heritage Centre, features 100 colourful and iconic railway posters from bygone days (see page 28).
Mike, a keen railway enthusiast and collector himself, contributed many of the iconic artworks which date from 1920 onwards. These were designed and created to promote popular Lincolnshire destinations, including Skegness, Cleethorpes, Lincoln and Mablethorpe (which had the first known poster produced for the county, in 1909).
It’s a rare opportunity to see, and in some cases buy, some of the beautiful and imaginative artwork. As Mike explains: “My greatest pleasure of collecting all forms of railwayana has been sharing knowledge and objects with others. I hope they will go to good homes and continue to be cherished.”
Meanwhile, there’s a fascinating insight into the jet set world of Formula One motor racing through the 1960s and ’70s as Roger Belton meets Andrea Thorlby, who shares fond memories from her unique role as nanny and personal assistant to world champion Graham Hill and his family (p.84).
Andrea’s job saw her travelling around Europe as part of the Formula One circus, rubbing shoulders with the glamorous cast of the motor racing world: “It changed my life and introduced me to a whole new world,” she recalls.
Her ties with the family grew strong over the many adventures she shared with them, so it’s no surprise to discover that even 50 years later, she remains in regular contact with them.
With lighter evenings and hopefully warmer temperatures ahead, this month is a great time to be planning days out. Our Experience Lincolnshire supplement highlights some fantastic places to visit, including gardens, special events and galleries (p.61).
Finally, as we count down to Easter, you’ll be inspired by Rachel Green’s special seasonal recipes which will impress your guests (p.46), as well as Dominic Franks’ classic Greek Salad, perfect for those summer days just around the corner (p.50).
Whatever you have planned, we hope everyone enjoys a wonderful month.
